What is “Ocean Wellbeing” and how does it affect surfing?

This is something that many people ask us when they contact us about our methods of coaching and it is a great question to ask as many people do not understand the emotional elements of surfing and how it affects our understandings of ourselves and our connection to our environment.

Within Chix Surf School we believe that surfing is 50% the technique of what your body needs to do to get the board to respond and 50% your emotional state and your ability to connect with the forever changing environment you have surrounded yourself with. The beauty of surfing is that you need to be able to gain a clear mindset and learn to feel and read the patterns of the ocean to be able to understand what the waves are requiring of you as a surfer. This is what we call your “rhythm” when your surfing and if you are able to be rhythmical with the waves then you are able to become a beautiful, strong and fluid surfer (which is what we all aim to be).

When you are surfing (no matter what level you are) it is about making the right decisions at the right time. This must be done in time with a moving surface that is not going to wait for you to make your decision so timing is everything. Your ability to be clear headed and commit to the decision you have made is vital and this will allow you to ride the wave with confidence and grace which is the unbelievable challenge and it comes with incredible reward.

Surfing is about believing in what you what to do and committing to doing it. Without this commitment you end up right where you don’t want to be which is most of the time under the water or going over the falls in the impact zone (not a fun place to be) and that instant impact activates our fears and anxieties. So quickly things can change in the ocean and something that looked calm and tranquil can become big and powerful but it’s how we manage ourselves which will give us the outcome we are looking for.

Reading the ocean is a life long skill that will empower your body and soul…

Hi, my name is Gee Cormack founder/ owner & head coach here at Chix Surf School. I have been surfing since I can remember, since I was a little kid getting in the water before and after school with my big brother. I was also a nippers kid so learning about everything the ocean had to offer was what we loved to do most.
